Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange, Baroque minor basilica in Menton, France.
The Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange is a baroque church in Menton's old town, distinguished by its ornate architectural style. Two monumental stone ramps lead up to the entrance, allowing the building to rise prominently above the surrounding area.
The foundation stone was laid in 1619 by Prince Honoré II and Bishop Nicolas Spinola, with the church consecrated around 1675. This construction took place during a period of growth for the region.
The basilica serves as a spiritual center in the old town, where locals and pilgrims gather regularly. Its ornate baroque facade and bell tower have become defining features of Menton's historic quarter.
The building is open year-round and visitors can attend services, particularly Sunday mass at 11:00 AM. Plan your visit by checking opening hours beforehand and wear comfortable shoes, as the steep stone ramps require some effort to climb.
The plaza in front of the basilica is paved with around 250,000 pebbles arranged in traditional geometric patterns. This intricate pebble work covers about 170 square meters and recreates a design from the 18th century that was carefully reconstructed.
