Bassin d'Apollon, Water fountain in Les Mureaux, France
The Bassin d'Apollon is a fountain in Les Mureaux featuring Apollo driving a chariot pulled by four horses, with this sculpture rising from the water as its central focus. The basin displays classical design with the group of figures positioned at the center of the water surface.
The basin was created between 1668 and 1671 as a transformation of an older water body once called the Pond of the Swans. This conversion into an ornate fountain represented the introduction of classical artistic forms to this location.
The fountain shows Apollo as depicted in Greek mythology, linking ancient stories to French royal culture and the artistic values of the court. This figure represents power and artistic achievement as valued during the age of Versailles.
The fountain is easily accessible from outside and can be visited at any time since it is located in public space. The water displays and surface reflections are best viewed during daylight hours, particularly at midday or late afternoon when light conditions are favorable.
A complete marble replica of this fountain was created for the Chimei Museum in Taiwan using precise laser measurements and Italian stone carvers. This reproduction shows how classical French artworks have been recreated and relocated to distant places around the world.
