Centre historique minier, Lewarde

The Centre Historique Minier is a mining museum in Lewarde housed within the former Delloye colliery complex, spread across several buildings on the original mine site. It displays underground galleries, machinery, mining equipment, and reconstructed work and living spaces that illustrate the mining profession.

A coal mine operated on this site from 1720 until 1971, when economic shifts in French mining led to its closure. The buildings were later transformed into a museum to preserve the history of mining in the region.

The reconstructed miners' homes and bathhouse reveal how workers and their families lived in this region, with displays of clothing and personal objects showing daily routines both above and below ground. Walking through these rooms gives a real sense of what life meant for people tied to this industry.

The museum is open daily with guided tours available through the mining circuit, though hours vary by season. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for uneven ground, as the site follows the natural terrain of the former mine.

The site offers simulated mine shaft descents where visitors wear safety helmets and explore reconstructed extraction tunnels from different periods. This hands-on experience brings the working conditions underground to life in a direct and memorable way.
