Château de Buzay

The Château de Buzay is a neoclassical residence with Ionic columns, curved architectural details, and carefully balanced proportions throughout its facade. The building features multiple levels with spacious rooms and halls that reflect the wealth and refined design of its original owners.

A wealthy merchant from La Rochelle began construction in 1771 as a symbol of his prosperity and status in the city. The building was created during a period of economic growth when maritime trade shaped the entire region.

The grand hall contains furnishings and portraits that show how wealthy French families lived in the 1700s. Walking through these rooms gives you a sense of the daily life and habits of the nobility of that time.

The castle is open from April through November, with daily visits during summer months and weekend-only access in spring and fall. Plan to spend time exploring the interior rooms slowly to fully appreciate the details and furnishings.

The north pediment features a clock dial surrounded by mythological figures representing navigation tools used at sea. This detail blends art with the maritime history that shaped the original owner's wealth.
