Château de Caumale

Château de Caumale is a medieval castle in Escalans featuring two towers from the 12th century and five additional ones built during the 15th and 16th centuries within its outer walls. The structure includes four reception rooms and a large cellar designed to accommodate events for 25 to 500 guests.

The fortress was built starting in the 12th century and received additional fortifications in later centuries. During the Hundred Years War and the Wars of Religion, it served as a defensive stronghold and refuge for residents of the nearby town of Gabarret.

The castle was home to the Delisle family across generations, who reshaped its rooms in the 18th century and gave the place new meaning. The family left their mark on the interior that visitors can still observe today.

The site offers space and facilities for private events and celebrations of all sizes. Visitors should plan ahead, as the castle is a formal venue and viewings or gatherings typically need to be arranged in advance.

According to records by Abbot Devert, an underground passage connects the castle to the town of Gabarret. This hidden tunnel system was likely used as an escape route or for secret communication during times of conflict.
