Château de Chailvet

Château de Chailvet is a Renaissance castle with elegantly designed arcades and a gallery positioned above them, flanked by two square towers containing spiral staircases. These towers are crowned with circular turret domes that distinctly shape the building's appearance.

Construction began in the 16th century under the Lords of La Vieuville, who built it as a residence. It suffered major damage during both World Wars, which was only repaired after decades of intensive restoration work.

The dovecote with its late 16th-century moldings shows how important these structures were for supplying the castle residents. It is among the oldest examples of its kind in the Laonnois region and reveals the craftsmanship of that era.

The castle opens its outdoor spaces to visitors during heritage days. Since it is not accessible daily, planning ahead to catch these opening days is worthwhile.

The facade displays the only Italian-influenced Renaissance architecture in the former Picardy region, marking a rare architectural identity. This Italian style was unusual in northern France and makes the castle a notable example of cultural exchange during that period.
