La Hottée de Gargantua

La Hottée de Gargantua is a sandstone boulder field in Molinchart where erosion has carved the rocks into rounded, distinctive shapes scattered across the forest floor. The formation spans a wooded area with stones of varying sizes clustered together and separated by gaps and passages.

This rocky terrain formed millions of years ago when sand accumulated in thick layers during a different climate period. Over vast stretches of time, water and weather gradually shaped these sandstone blocks into the patterns and forms visible today.

The name comes from Gargantua, a figure in French literature who, according to local stories, created these rocks while cleaning mud from his boots. This legend ties a fantastical character to the wild landscape you see today.

The site is open year-round and offers a free parking area nearby for visitors. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven with rocks and tree roots throughout the paths.

The sandstone blocks display distinctive erosion patterns that create hollow, pot-like structures called gogottes across the landscape. This geological feature turns each cluster of rocks into its own natural sculpture, shaped by millions of years of weathering.
