Château de Chalencon

Château de Chalencon is a fortress perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Ance River valley with crenellated towers and a distinctive keep. The structure spreads across multiple levels on the hilltop and shapes the landscape of the surrounding gorge.

This fortress was built in the 10th century to control the trade route between the Velay and Forez regions. The location held strategic importance for overseeing passages and managing tolls in this mountainous area.

The chapel within the castle displays romanesque features from the 11th century and preserves traces of various building phases. Visitors can observe the windows and details that reflect the different construction periods.

The site is accessible by a climb from the village below and provides orientation markers for visitors on the grounds. The multiple levels require some mobility as paths and stairs are present throughout.
