Château d'Artias

Château d'Artias is a castle perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Loire Valley landscape in Haute-Loire. The structure spans multiple medieval periods, with sections dating to different centuries and a Romanesque chapel as a central landmark on the grounds.

The castle was built in the late 10th century and ranks among the oldest fortifications in the Velay region. The Romanesque chapel was added in the 12th century, showing how the site was expanded and improved over time.

The name reflects an old family lineage connected to the medieval past of this region. Today visitors can explore the botanical garden and view medieval artifacts in the reception area that reveal how people lived centuries ago.

The grounds are open year-round, and guided tours are available for smaller groups in multiple languages. Plan time to walk through the entire site, including the garden areas and the different buildings scattered across the promontory.

A newly constructed dry-stone bread oven demonstrates traditional building methods that were used for centuries in the region. This reconstructed oven stands in a memory garden, bridging historical craftsmanship with the visitor experience.
