Château de Chalmazel

Château de Chalmazel, Medieval fortress in Chalmazel-Jeansagnière, France.

Château de Chalmazel is a medieval fortress on a hilltop featuring four round towers and a central square keep without side openings. The structure overlooks the Lignon Valley and shows the typical design of a stronghold built for defense and control.

Construction began in 1231 when Count Guy IV of Forez commissioned Arnaud de Marcilly to build a stronghold protecting local lords. The fortress evolved over the centuries as it adapted to changing needs during feudal conflicts.

The chapel inside holds painted works from the 15th and 17th centuries that show how religious art changed across different periods. These paintings tell stories about the beliefs and tastes of the people who lived here over time.

The castle offers guest rooms for overnight stays decorated with period furnishings that reflect its long history. Guided tours are available from June through September to explore the building and learn about its past.

The castle contains underground passages and walkways that survived numerous medieval conflicts over the centuries. These hidden tunnels show how the stronghold was designed to endure and adapt through times of danger.
