Château de Chalmazel, Medieval fortress in Chalmazel-Jeansagnière, France.

The castle features four round towers and a square keep without side openings, situated on a hill overlooking the Lignon Valley.

Construction began in 1231 under Count Guy IV of Forez, who commissioned Arnaud de Marcilly to build a stronghold to protect local lords.

The interior chapel contains preserved paintings from the 15th and 17th centuries, demonstrating the evolution of religious art across generations.

Visitors can stay in five guest rooms with period decorations, and the castle offers guided tours from June through September.

The castle includes underground passages and walkways that remained intact through numerous feudal conflicts of the medieval period.
