Château de Montmoreau

Château de Montmoreau is a medieval fortress in the French village of Montmoreau-Saint-Cybard with roots dating back over 9 centuries. The structure features a 15th-century main building with two towers, a polygonal turret housing a spiral staircase, and decorated entrance gates bearing heraldic carvings.

The fortress was established in the 11th century but suffered destruction during the Hundred Years' War between England and France. Reconstruction took place in the 15th century under Baron Jean de Mareuil, who shaped its current appearance.

The chapel inside displays a central rotunda with a dome and three vaulted side chapels, reflecting medieval building practices that visitors can still see today.

The castle is located in Montmoreau-Saint-Cybard and opens mainly during Heritage Days when guided tours of the grounds are offered to visitors. It is best to check opening times in advance, as regular access may be limited outside these special events.

The exterior choir section displays arcade structures supported by pilasters with high arches, indicating that an upper floor once existed in this area. These architectural clues reveal building phases from centuries ago that are no longer fully present today.
