Château de Montméry, Medieval castle in Ambazac, France.
Château de Montméry is a manor with two perpendicular wings, where the east wing forms the main structure and displays Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance features. The protected elements include the facades, roofs, entrance hall, and central staircase.
An 11th-century motte fortress once stood on the site as the original fortification before the current building was constructed. In 1883, an American porcelain manufacturer acquired the estate and commissioned a renowned architect to redesign it according to contemporary tastes.
The castle blends architectural elements from different periods, each reflecting how building styles evolved over time. Visitors can observe these layers as they move through the rooms and explore the layout.
The grounds feature an expansive landscaped park with over 100 tree species from around the world, inviting visitors to stroll through the grounds. The paths are accessible and provide plenty of space for exploring and lingering.
The park was designed in the late 1800s by a famous American landscape designer known for creating other major gardens. This international collection of tree species was unusual for the time when it was planted.
