Maison de Lamartine, Historic castle and monument in Milly-Lamartine, France.

Maison de Lamartine is an 18th-century manor house with stone walls, narrow windows, and a slate roof situated on a former wine estate in the Saône-et-Loire region. The building is surrounded by mature trees and gardens that reflect the rural character of the surrounding countryside.

The estate was built in 1705 as a manor house for a large wine property in the region. Alphonse de Lamartine lived there from 1794 to 1801 during his formative years, before the family sold it in 1860 due to financial hardship.

The house displays the poet's personal belongings and manuscripts that show how his birthplace shaped his Romantic writings. Walking through the rooms, you can see the spaces where he spent formative years that later influenced his most famous works.

The house is open to visitors on Sundays and holidays from May through September, while outside these months visits can be arranged for groups by advance request. It is helpful to contact the location in advance to confirm available times and whether a guided tour would be offered during your visit.

The poet reportedly composed many of his most celebrated verses during walks through the surrounding countryside, which later appeared in his famous romantic collections. This connection between the rural landscape and his literary works made the place a significant source of inspiration for his artistic journey.

Hidden treasures in Saône-et-Loire

Saône-et-Loire holds stories from all parts of French history. You can find caves where prehistoric people lived, like the Azé cave with its stalactites or the rocks of Solutré that overlook the vineyards. The area also has Celtic remains at Bibracte, a fortified city on the heights of Mount Beuvray. The Romanesque monasteries show the time when Cluny was the spiritual heart of medieval Europe, and its basilica served as a model for the one in Paray-le-Monial. Medieval castles like Brancion or Berzé-le-Châtel still stand on their hills, with towers and walls keeping watch over the valleys. The villages still have their solid stone Romanesque churches, castles, and squares where life goes on quietly. In Tournus, you can visit the Saint-Philibert Abbey from the tenth century and find paintings by an eighteenth-century painter at the Greuze museum. Some places are surprising, like the Blanot caves that go deep under the ground. This mix of sights lets you walk through many centuries of history while exploring the Burgundy countryside.
