Château de Montausier

Château de Montausier is a medieval castle in Baignes-Sainte-Radegonde, of which only one tower survives today. The tower displays stone and rubble construction with a tile-roofed pavilion-style roof, standing alone as a single sentinel from the past.

The castle was built in the 15th century as a fortress and was heavily damaged in 1793 during the French Revolution. The Sainte-Maure family shaped the site's history through their rule across multiple generations.

The château once served as the seat of a prominent noble family and shaped local community life for centuries. Today the remaining structure reminds visitors of the place's importance in regional society.

The site is privately owned and not freely accessible to visitors. Those interested should contact local authorities in advance to inquire about possible viewing arrangements.

Near the tower stands a smaller building called Abbé Michon's manor, constructed between 1871 and 1879. The structure displays Moorish architectural influences that are unusual for this region and reflect the period's fascination with exotic building styles.
