Château de Montchaude

Château de Montchaude is a Renaissance-era château in Montmérac built with a central body flanked by two pavilions. The building features slate roofing and decorative dormer windows with floral designs and curved ornamental patterns.

The château began construction in the 16th century under the Bouchard d'Aubeterre family. Extensive renovations during the 19th century reshaped much of its structure and appearance.

The château reflects how French nobility shaped their homes during the Renaissance, mixing fortified elements with comfortable living spaces. Visitors can observe how the building combines traditional defensive features with the refined aesthetic preferences of its time.

The château sits between Cognac and Angoulême, both towns offering visitor services and places to stay. Check in advance about visiting possibilities, as this is a private residence and access may be limited or restricted.

In the 1980s, a member of Oman's ruling family purchased the property and launched a major restoration initiative. This ambitious project saved the building from deterioration and brought back much of its former character.
