Château de Montastruc

Château de Montastruc is a medieval fortress with stone walls, defensive towers, and an elevated position in the Dordogne region. The structure contains underground caverns and preserves several historical rooms filled with period furnishings.

The castle was built in the 13th century and served as a strategic site in the medieval region. During World War II, it provided refuge to the Grand-ducal family of Luxembourg while they awaited visas to leave.

The kitchens from the 18th century contain vaulted rooms with original flooring and working historical ovens that show how people cooked in that era. Visitors can observe the daily food preparation methods used centuries ago.

The castle opens during European Heritage Days in September and offers free guided tours. Visitors can explore the courtyard, fortified walls, and underground caverns with a guide.

Ancient markings and scratches found in the caves and attics document major historical events and ordinary daily life across several centuries. These handwritten traces offer a direct window into the past.
