Château de Pailhès, Historical monument in Pailhès, France.
Château de Pailhès is a castle positioned on a rise above the village, situated between Maz-d'Azil and Pamiers in southern France. The property includes multiple structures with a chapel and an orangery on its southern side.
Construction of this fortress started in the 12th century and continued through the 17th century, reflecting different architectural periods of the medieval and early modern eras. It received protected monument status in 1997.
The guard room displays 16th-century graffiti carved into the walls by visitors of that time. These scratched marks show how people across centuries have left traces of their presence in the fortress.
The fortress remains in private ownership by the La Fage de Pailhès family and is not open to visitors. View it from outside and enjoy the perspective from the village looking up at its elevated position.
A hidden element within the fortress is a 14th-century turret still containing its original wooden staircase. This old staircase shows the craftsmanship and building methods of an earlier phase in the structure's history.
