Grotte du Mas-d'Azil, Prehistoric cave system in Le Mas-d'Azil, France.

Grotte du Mas-d'Azil is a cave system carved through limestone with a monumental entrance rising 51 meters high and 48 meters wide. The network extends 500 meters and is crossed by both a river and a road, creating an unusual layout.

The site reveals evidence of human settlement spanning 20,000 years, with discoveries of tools, weapons, and over 1,300 painted pebbles from prehistoric periods. These finds document how early people used this place across many successive generations.

The cave displays engravings and paintings depicting bison, horses, and geometric designs that show how early people expressed themselves through art. These works give you a direct sense of the skills and imagination of the prehistoric inhabitants.

Visitors should prepare for 288 steps during the one-hour guided tour through the cave. The paths cross varying terrain, so comfortable footwear is important for the walk.

This is the only cave in the world where both a river and a public road pass through its passages. This rare arrangement lets you hear vehicles and even catch glimpses of light from the outside world.
