Château de Pennautier

Château de Pennautier, Historical castle near Carcassonne, France

Château de Pennautier is a castle near Carcassonne with two grand wings designed by Le Vau. The French gardens spread across the grounds, and vineyards surround the main building.

The castle was built in 1620 by Bernard Reich de Pennautier, the Treasurer of Languedoc. King Louis XIII visited the estate in 1622 and left behind a collection of furnishings.

The estate carries the name of a family that has shaped this place for generations. You can see how residents continue to use the chapel and how winemaking remains central to daily life here.

The place is best reached by car and parking is available on the grounds. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the paths lead through gardens and vineyards.

The grounds hold an original family chapel that visitors often overlook. From certain spots, you can see both the Pyrenees and the Massif Central mountain ranges.
