Castle of Pomponne

Castle of Pomponne is a Baroque structure with high ceilings, grand staircases, and symmetrical facades designed according to French Baroque principles. The building displays the characteristic features of this architectural style and was created by prominent architects of the period.

François Mansart began constructing the castle in 1666, but after his death his nephew Jules Hardouin-Mansart completed the architectural project. This collaboration between two major builders shaped the building's final form.

The estate was originally designed with formal gardens that reflect French garden traditions of its time. Visitors can still recognize the structure of these historical gardens today, even though the grounds are not freely accessible.

The castle now serves as headquarters for a Republican Security Company, which significantly limits access to the grounds and interior. It is advisable to check in advance about any possible tours or public events.

In May and June 1918, meetings between Georges Clemenceau and Allied military leaders took place here that contributed to World War I victory. These political and strategic discussions made the castle an important location in wartime history.
