Ile de Loisirs de Vaires - Torcy : l’espace baignade, Recreational park in Seine-et-Marne, France
The Île de Loisirs de Vaires-Torcy is a large recreational area with artificial lakes and sandy beaches located about 30 minutes east of Paris. The grounds offer a swimming zone with lifeguard supervision and shaded picnic areas scattered around the waterfront.
The site was developed starting in the 1970s to meet the growing recreational needs of Parisians seeking outdoor water activities. The lakes were created by transforming former gravel quarries into a modern leisure landscape.
The Olympic Nautical Stadium within the park will host rowing and canoe-kayak events during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The swimming area operates during summer through early autumn with trained staff providing supervision to keep swimmers safe. Ample free parking is available and the facilities are easily accessible on foot, allowing visitors to reach the water quickly.
The area was once an industrial site with quarries whose excavated holes naturally filled with water, creating the lakes seen today. This transformation from resource extraction to natural landscape shows an interesting story of land reuse.
