The castle features a square donjon rising 25 meters high with buttresses at each corner and walls measuring 2 meters in thickness.
Catherine de Thouars modified the castle in the 15th century by adding new floors, a spiral staircase, and windows to replace older defensive arrowslits.
The castle became a French historical monument in 1862, representing the architectural evolution from military fortress to residential manor through centuries.
Visitors can explore the donjon during summer evenings in July and August, with guided tours available on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
The castle grounds witnessed a tragic event in 1794 when 31 local inhabitants seeking refuge were executed during the War in Vendée.
