Fosse Arenberg, Historic coal mine in Wallers, France.

Fosse Arenberg is a former coal mine in Wallers, in northern France, made up of pit head towers, engine rooms, administrative buildings, and underground galleries. The complex is largely intact, giving a clear picture of how a large industrial mining site was laid out and operated.

The Anzin Mining Company opened this site around 1900, and it quickly grew into one of the main workplaces in the region. Mining stopped in 1989, after nearly a century of continuous coal extraction.

The site is now home to film studios and television productions that use the old industrial buildings as working spaces. Visitors can see how the heavy brick structures and machine halls have taken on a new role without losing their original look.

Anyone planning to go underground should bring warm and water-resistant clothing, as the tunnels are damp and cool. The site is large, so comfortable shoes and enough time to walk around are a good idea.

The third pit head tower on the site was the first steel headframe built in France, replacing the older wooden structures used elsewhere. This made it a reference point for other mines in the region when they updated their own equipment.
