Mare à Goriaux, Biological reserve in Raismes, France

The Mare à Goriaux reserve spans 145 hectares, featuring a large water body, forest areas, riparian vegetation, and a 2-kilometer flat slag heap.

The water body formed through mining subsidence from operations at Vicoigne pit and Arenberg mine, transforming from a basic duck pond into a 90-hectare lake.

The National Office of Forests maintains this protected area, which received its biological reserve status in 1982 due to its ecological significance.

Visitors can access the site through the dedicated parking area, with winter closing time at 5:30 PM and summer closing time at 6:30 PM.

The reserve serves as a habitat for sixty nesting bird species and provides a sanctuary for migrating ospreys throughout their seasonal journeys.
