Filature des Calquières, Industrial heritage museum in Langogne, France.
Filature des Calquières is a wool spinning mill in Langogne spread across multiple floors, with each level dedicated to different stages of fiber processing. The facility shows the work from initial washing through to the spinning operations and finishing steps.
The site began as a grain and fulling mill in the 15th century before being converted to a wool spinning facility in 1853. It continued operating until 1990, reflecting the industrial evolution of the region.
The place demonstrates traditional wool processing techniques using original 19th-century machinery that still operates for demonstrations. Visitors can observe how work was organized in this mill and what skills workers needed to master.
The mill is easy to navigate on foot and rooms are accessible via stairs and elevators throughout. Plan to spend time watching the machines in operation and exploring the different floors at a comfortable pace.
The building houses the last surviving French-made Mule Jenny spinning machine from between 1850 and 1860. This machine still works today and demonstrates the advanced textile technology of that era.
