Arp foundation, Art museum and studio house in Clamart, France
The Arp Foundation is a modernist residence with adjoining art studios set within a garden in Clamart. The collections display sculptures, paintings, drawings, and written works by both artists across different periods of their creative practice.
The couple purchased the land in 1927, and Sophie designed a cohesive architectural composition with the residence and two workshops. Following the war and Sophie's passing, the site eventually became a museum dedicated to preserving their artistic legacy.
The foundation honors the artistic partnership between Jean and Sophie Taeuber-Arp and their contributions to the Dada movement. Visitors encounter the spaces where both artists lived and created together, experiencing directly how their work and daily life were inseparable.
The museum is accessible by public transport and located in a quiet residential area, allowing time to explore all the rooms and studios at a leisurely pace. The garden can be particularly pleasant in good weather and invites visitors to wander through it slowly.
Sophie Taeuber-Arp was not only an artist but also the architect of her own home, deliberately designing each element according to modernist principles. This rare example of an artist as builder of her living environment remains visible in the spatial organization today.
