Jardin botanique de Bordeaux, Municipal botanical garden in Bordeaux, France
The Botanical Garden of Bordeaux is a research garden in Bordeaux, France, located partly within the Jardin Public and housing around 3,000 plant species. The collection features plants from the Aquitaine region as well as from North America, China, and Japan, carefully maintained and documented for study.
The project started in 1629 when Bordeaux established its first medicinal plant garden to grow healing plants for medical purposes. It evolved into a scientific research institution, reaching its current form in 1858.
The garden serves as a place where researchers work to understand and document plant life from different parts of the world. Visitors can observe how plants are organized by origin and see the practical side of botanical science in action.
The garden has two locations: one at La Bastide and another at the Jardin Public, with different sections accessible throughout the year. Warmer months offer longer daylight hours, making them ideal for a thorough visit.
The garden houses the first plantation of Chinese windmill palms in France, introduced by botanist Michel Durieu de Maisonneuve. This achievement marks it as a site where exotic plants were first brought to European study.
