Les Horizons, Residential high-rise building in Bourg-l'Évesque, France
Les Horizons consists of two connected towers on Rennes's western edge with prefabricated concrete facades. The complex spans 35 floors and houses around 1,000 residents in mostly compact apartments.
The building opened in 1970 following designs by architect Georges Mailhols as one of France's first post-war residential towers. Its rapid construction demonstrated how modern techniques transformed urban development.
The two towers form a striking landmark in Rennes's skyline and continue to shape the Bourg-l'Évesque neighborhood today. They show how the city chose to grow in the 1970s by creating new housing models for young residents.
You can reach the complex easily by public transport from central Rennes, and footpaths and cycling routes circle the towers. Visitors can freely explore the exterior architecture and surrounding plaza.
The prefabrication method allowed rapid progress of roughly one complete floor per week during construction. This made the towers an early model for modern residential building techniques across Europe.
