Marché aux truffes de Richerenches, Black truffle market in Richerenches, France.
The Marché aux truffes de Richerenches is a seasonal black truffle market held in the village of Richerenches, in the Vaucluse department of Provence. Trading takes place along two streets, one reserved for wholesale transactions and another where smaller retail sales happen.
The market was established in the 1920s as an organized trading point for black truffles in this part of Provence. Over the following decades, it grew into one of the most recognized truffle markets in France.
The black truffle has long been a central ingredient in Provençal cooking, and this market reflects how seriously local people take it. Buyers and sellers inspect each batch quietly and carefully, using their hands and noses more than any words.
The market runs only during the winter season, roughly from December to March, when black truffles are at their peak. Arriving early in the morning gives you the best chance to see the wholesale activity before it winds down.
Although the market is open to anyone, the actual prices on the wholesale side are never announced aloud but are negotiated in quiet, face-to-face exchanges. This makes it one of the few trading places where a casual visitor can stand close to a professional deal without any barrier.
