Château de Grignan, Renaissance castle in Grignan, France

Château de Grignan is a Renaissance castle perched on a rocky outcrop above the village of Grignan, combining Renaissance and classical French architectural features. The building unfolds across multiple levels with furnished rooms and spacious outdoor terraces.

The structure originated as a fortress in the 11th century and later underwent major renovations by the Adhémar family. Damage occurred during the French Revolution, though restoration efforts followed afterward.

The castle became well-known through the letters of Madame de Sévigné, who wrote extensively during her visits with her daughter and immortalized the place in her correspondence. These historical writings continue to shape how people view and experience the location today.

Access is on foot through the village of Grignan, which sits on a slope, so some climbing is involved. Guided tours lead through the furnished rooms, while several viewing points can be explored at your own pace.

The castle features the largest Renaissance terraces in France, from which visitors can see the snow-capped peaks of Mont Ventoux and the jagged Dentelles de Montmirail. On clear days, a distant sea view extends across the landscape.
