Maison carrée de Nay

Maison carrée de Nay is a stone building in central Nay constructed with precise geometric proportions where the facade height matches its length. The structure features square-shaped portico openings that define its distinctive appearance.

The building was constructed in the second half of the 16th century by merchant Pedro Sacaze, who had become wealthy through Spanish trade networks. Jeanne d'Albret briefly seized the property during her time in the region.

The building now houses collections showing daily life in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, with a focus on traditional crafts, farming, and pastoral practices of the region. Visitors can see how these subjects are presented throughout the exhibition spaces.

The house is centrally located and easily reached on foot, with regular openings for visits and changing exhibitions throughout the year. It is wise to check opening times before visiting, as occasional closures may occur.

The house takes its name from its mathematically exact proportions, which set it apart from other regional buildings of its era. This geometric precision was an unusual feature for architecture of that period in this area.
