Musée du compagnonnage

The Musée du Compagnonnage is a museum in Tours that displays collections of tools, drafts, and masterpieces created from wood, stone, metal, leather, textiles, and food materials. The exhibits come from diverse craftsmanship traditions and illustrate the range of artisan skills developed over centuries.

The museum opened in 1968 in a former abbey and presents artifacts from French craftsmen guilds known as the Compagnons du Tour de France. This movement grew from a long tradition of traveling apprentices who journeyed from city to city to perfect their skills.

The collection reflects the craftsmanship guild system through ritual staffs and insignias that marked membership in different trade organizations. Visitors can observe how these symbols and tools shaped the identity and solidarity of traditional French artisan communities.

The museum is located in the city center and is easily accessible on foot, with parking nearby for visitors traveling by car. It is helpful to wear comfortable shoes since the exhibition spans multiple rooms and requires time to explore.
