Hôtel de Beaune-Semblançay

The Hôtel de Beaune-Semblançay is a private mansion in Tours featuring a Renaissance facade with a wide gallery of five arches supported by decorated pillars. The ornamental details include slate diamond patterns that are inlaid into the stone work of the pilasters.

Jacques de Beaune, a senior financial official under King Francis I, commissioned the construction and expansion of this mansion between 1486 and 1518. The decades-long building project reflected the owner's rising influence and wealth at the royal court.

The mansion reflects how wealthy merchants and royal officials wanted to display their status through architecture in the early Renaissance. Its open gallery and ornamental details showed visitors the owner's refined taste and position in society.

The mansion is located on Rue Nationale in Tours city center and is easy to reach on foot. The south-facing gallery is visible from the street, allowing visitors to view the Renaissance facade without special access.

The slate diamonds inlaid into the pilasters were individually cut and inserted into the stone surface, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship of the Renaissance period. This labor-intensive technique was uncommon and made the house a remarkable example of skilled stonework.
