Monument de la Pierre d'Haudroy, War memorial in La Flamengrie, France
The Monument de la Pierre d'Haudroy is a war memorial located at the intersection of road D285 between La Capelle and Haudroy, built from Vosges granite. Informational panels at the site explain its historical importance to visitors.
On November 7, 1918 at 8:20 PM, German plenipotentiaries arrived at this location to negotiate the armistice ending World War I. The original monument was destroyed in 1940, but was later reconstructed in 1948 using a stone brought from Ravensbrück.
Each year until 1948, Corporal-bugler Pierre Sellier performed the cease-fire signal at this monument to commemorate the historic moment.
The site is accessible year-round via the D285 road connecting Wignehies to La Capelle. Visitors should be aware this is a roadside memorial best visited during daylight hours.
The central stone of the reconstructed memorial came from Ravensbrück concentration camp in Germany and was brought back by Ernest Gernez after World War II ended. This unexpected origin links the armistice story directly to Nazi-era suffering.
