Le Petit Donon, Mountain summit in Northern Vosges, France

Le Petit Donon is a summit in the northern Vosges that rises to approximately 1000 meters above sea level. The landscape consists of dense forests interspersed with sandstone formations that create a distinctive environment for hiking.

During World War I, the summit served as a strategic observation post for German forces who built bunkers and fortifications. Remnants of these military installations remain visible on the mountain today.

The sandstone walls display inscriptions carved by a stonemason to commemorate fallen soldiers, telling personal stories that visitors encounter while hiking. These engravings remain touching reminders of sacrifice and remembrance carved into the rock itself.

Hiking trails are well marked with starting points at several parking areas around the mountain. Visitors should exercise care during bad weather since sandstone formations can become slippery underfoot.

Two major regional rivers have their sources on the mountain's slopes with their springs located close to one another. This geographical feature makes the location noteworthy for understanding water courses in the area.
