Port-Maubert

Port-Maubert is a fishing and leisure harbor in Saint-Fort-sur-Gironde that stretches along a 500-meter channel where the Taillon flows into the Gironde estuary. The basin provides moorings for roughly 85 boats and includes green spaces and walking paths.

The harbor was first recorded in 1544 and emerged after the older Port de Beaumont was abandoned in the 16th century due to silting. This shift shows how residents adapted to changing geography of the waterway.

The harbor remains a working fishing place where people engage with the water and local boating life. Daily activity reflects how the location stays connected to the life of the estuary.

The grounds are easy to walk around and offer quiet areas to explore. A local sailing club teaches lessons at the basin, so visitors can observe or join water activities.

During the 1950s, the harbor was notable for substantial sturgeon fishing, yielding several tons yearly for caviar production. This period shaped its story and reflects a resource no longer exploited today.
