Prieuré de Vausse

Prieuré de Vausse is a priory in Châtel-Gérard featuring Romanesque design with rounded arches and strong stone pillars. A cloister occupies the central space, where a medicinal plant garden once grew.

The priory was established in the early 1200s and served as a religious community for more than 500 years. After monks departed in the mid-1700s, the site was converted into a pottery workshop.

The priory combines architectural elements from Cistercian and Carthusian traditions, reflecting the religious practices of medieval Burgundian monasticism.

The site is open during heritage events when you can move freely through the medieval rooms and courtyards. Plan time to walk through the cloister and explore the different areas at your own pace.

Ernest Petit, a prominent Burgundian historian, was born at the priory in 1835 and dedicated his career to documenting its extensive history.
