Rubricaire, Roman thermae ruins in Sainte-Gemmes-le-Robert, France
Rubricaire is a Roman thermal complex near Sainte-Gemmes-le-Robert with preserved stone walls and bathing facilities. The remains come from a waystation along an ancient road and show typical Roman construction with stone and brick foundations.
The site was founded in antiquity as a waystation called Robrica and appears on a Roman map from the 4th century. Official excavations in the 20th century confirmed its importance and led to its recognition as a protected monument.
The thermal complex followed a Roman layout with distinct areas for bathing and relaxation. Visitors can still see how the Romans organized water and heat to fit their daily routines.
Access to the excavation site is on foot via paths that cross the hilly terrain around Mont Rochard. Visitors should bring proper footwear and use the trails in dry conditions, as the ground is rough and uneven.
The underground heating system beneath the baths shows how Romans distributed warmth through pillars and tunnels beneath the floors. This technique allowed them to keep bathing water at steady temperatures, providing comfort across centuries.
