GR 59, footpath in France
The GR 59 is a long-distance trail that stretches through the Vosges and Jura mountains, crossing landscapes with hills, dense forests, and river valleys. The path connects smaller towns and passes over several high points such as Ballon d'Alsace, which offer views over the surrounding region.
The project to create the trail began in the early 1970s and was officially approved in 1973 to connect existing walking routes together. Its name came from linking two well-known long-distance trails, the GR 5 and the GR 9, which connect mountain areas and lakes in the region.
The trail connects people from different regions and makes local traditions visible that have been passed down through generations. In the villages along the route, walkers see traditional houses, vineyards, and old crafts that remain part of daily life.
The trail is marked with signs and walking maps that are available from tourist offices and make navigation easier. Accommodation options such as small inns, guesthouses, and gites are found along the route and in villages, where you can also enjoy regional meals.
Volunteers have maintained and helped build the trail for decades, transforming old farms and barns into simple rest places for hikers. These grassroots efforts show how much local communities value the path and welcome visitors to explore their home.
