Église Saint-Michel de Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, Catholic church in Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, France.
The Église Saint-Michel de Fontevraud-l'Abbaye is a Catholic church in the village of Fontevraud-l'Abbaye with a nave divided into four bays. Three bays date to the 13th century, while a fourth was added during 15th-century renovations to extend the interior.
The church was founded in 1177 under Abbess Audeburge de Haute-Bruyère as a new independent parish separated from Saint-Martin de Roiffé. This establishment was part of the Benedictine monastic community at Fontevraud.
The interior displays artworks from the 16th and 17th centuries, with paintings depicting the Passion and the Resurrection of Lazarus that define its visual character. These religious images shape how visitors experience the sacred space within its walls.
The church is easily accessible from the main village square where its facade is visible. Visiting during quieter times allows you to admire the interior artworks and architecture without distraction.
The main altar was crafted in 1621 by sculptor Gervais Delabarre and showcases Loire Valley artisanal skill. This work represents a noteworthy example of religious woodcarving that often goes unnoticed by visitors.
