Métaphone, Contemporary concert venue in Oignies, France
Métaphone is a contemporary concert venue in northern France featuring a black concrete core wrapped in an exterior shell of glass, steel, and wooden panels. The building holds approximately 500 seated or 1000 standing visitors for performances and events.
The building opened in 2013 on the site of former coal mines numbered 9 and 9bis. This development marks the shift from industrial production to cultural use in the local community.
The name reflects the transformation of a former industrial site into a space for music and community gatherings. Visitors experience how contemporary design and local heritage coexist in the same place.
The building is easy to spot thanks to its distinctive black concrete structure and light-colored exterior panels. Visitors should note that technical maintenance areas between the inner core and outer shell are not open to the public.
The exterior features 12 mechanical devices that function as musical instruments, producing sounds through vibrating plates and bowls. This installation transforms the building itself into a playable musical instrument.
