Mediolanum Aulercorum, Archaeological site in Évreux, France

Mediolanum Aulercorum is an ancient settlement whose remains spread across the Iton valley and showcase Roman structures along with finely crafted mosaic work. The site features a sophisticated drainage system that demonstrates the technical skill of its planners.

The settlement began as a Celtic center and later transformed into a Roman administrative capital in the first century. It grew into a major regional hub in Gallia Lugdunensis, reflecting the political shifts of that era.

The finds here reveal the working life of inhabitants through evidence of metalworking and textile production. Iron slag deposits and fulling tank remains show how active craftspeople were in daily production.

The excavation area is located in Évreux near Boulevard Pasteur and Rue de la Petite Cité and can be accessed through the town. Visitors should check in advance which areas are open for viewing since not all dig sites remain accessible at all times.

Excavations in 1889 uncovered an extraordinary treasure of Roman coins, including many from the time of Emperor Probus. This discovery reveals the scale of trade and wealth that existed in this region during the Roman period.
