Fort Chabrol, Viticulture research center in Épernay, France
Fort Chabrol is a historic training center in Épernay devoted to teaching vine cultivation and wine production methods. The building contained classrooms, laboratory spaces, and experimental areas where students learned about rootstock selection and vineyard management.
Moët & Chandon founded the first practical viticulture school at Fort Chabrol in 1900 to fight the phylloxera crisis destroying regional vineyards. The school became a center for developing new grafting techniques and rootstock research.
The fort played a central role in training vine specialists whose methods shaped how grapes are grown throughout the Champagne region. Knowledge passed on here remains visible in vineyard practices that locals continue today.
Visiting requires normal mobility since the historic site has traditional pathways and stair access throughout. Plan time to explore the laboratory spaces and training areas properly, especially if you want to understand the hands-on vineyard work taught here.
A distinctive feature was the awarding of the Brevet de Viticulture Champenoise diploma, a professional credential that qualified hundreds of vine experts until 1980. This diploma held respect and recognition throughout Champagne.
