Oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian purchased the property in 1937 and hired landscape architect Achille Duchêne to create gardens inspired by Spain's Retiro gardens. This redesign brought European garden design to the Normandy coast.
The grounds follow French classical design with tree-lined paths and planted beds where concerts and art events take place throughout the year. This formal layout creates spaces where visitors experience both structure and openness.
