The Réserve naturelle régionale du val de Loire Bourbonnais is a regional nature reserve in the Allier department of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, covering the communes of Garnat-sur-Engièvre and Saint-Martin-des-Lais. It protects a section of the Loire riverbed along with alluvial forests, gravel bars, dead channels, and pioneer grasslands on flood-prone land.
The land was used for farming and fishing for a long time before the Loire floodplain was given protected status. In 2015, the Auvergne Regional Council designated it as a regional nature reserve, making it the first and so far only one of its kind in the entire Allier department.
Visitors can walk marked trails along the Loire and watch how the river constantly reshapes the land around it. Those who move slowly often spot waterbirds resting on gravel bars or along the quieter side channels.
The trails are easy to follow and well marked, but the terrain can become difficult after flooding. A visit in spring or autumn is rewarding since bird activity along the river tends to peak during those periods.
The Loire shifts its course so regularly here that maps of the area can become outdated within a few years as islands and channels move. This constant movement is actually what makes the reserve valuable as a habitat, since many species depend on freshly exposed gravel and bare soil to nest or feed.
