Chapelle Saint-Christophe de Tain-l'Hermitage

The Saint Christopher Chapel sits on the Hermitage hill in Tain-l'Hermitage overlooking the Drôme and Rhône Valley. The building stands amid vineyards and belongs to the Paul Jaboulet Aîné wine estate.

The current structure was completed in 1864 and replaced an earlier religious building on a site with roots in ancient worship. The location was previously dedicated to the Roman god Hercules.

The place connects closely to wine production, as grapevines were planted here in the 13th century to produce wine for pilgrims visiting the site. You can sense this blend of religious devotion and viticulture throughout the surroundings.

The chapel belongs to a private wine estate with limited public access, though the forecourt hosts temporary events during summer months. The hilltop location requires some effort to reach but rewards visitors with extensive views.

Inside the chapel sits a notable altar with a statue of Saint Christopher holding the infant Jesus. This representation highlights the saint's role as protector of travelers and pilgrims.
