Château de Nontron, Historic castle in Nontron, France
Château de Nontron is a castle in the town of Nontron in Périgord featuring a central sculptural element on its western side. The structure follows a rectangular plan with multiple levels that overlook the Bandiat Valley below.
An early fortress at this location was given to Charroux Abbey in 785, which led to the founding of a monastery. Over the centuries the structure changed and eventually became the castle that stands today.
The castle now hosts a center for experimental arts and crafts that teaches and preserves traditional skills from the region. Visitors can observe local artisans working in the workshops and passing down their techniques.
The ground floor displays art exhibitions, a craft shop, and spaces where artisans demonstrate their work. Access to the upper levels involves stairs, so visitors should consider their mobility when planning a visit.
Eight vaulted structures support the first terrace of the castle gardens, offering expansive views from 40 meters high. These arches are a technical achievement from an earlier period and enable a large viewing platform on the terrace.
