Oppidum de Constantine

Oppidum de Constantine, Ancient fortified settlement in Lançon-Provence, France

The oppidum of Constantine is an ancient fortified settlement perched on a limestone plateau at the southern edge of the La Fare ridge. The approximately 6-hectare site overlooks the Berre lagoon and contains remains of residential areas, fortifications, and religious structures.

The settlement was founded between the late 2nd and 1st century BC as a significant center with advanced urban planning. It was abandoned around 20-10 BC but experienced resettlement in the late 4th century AD.

The settlement displays remnants of religious structures and civic buildings from ancient times. Statues and artifacts discovered there suggest a well-organized community with spiritual practices.

The archaeological site is located on private land and requires prior arrangement for visits. Much of the area is covered with dense vegetation, so sturdy footwear and care when exploring are advisable.

The site sits at the boundary between two distinct geological systems and features a deep natural shaft. This geological feature may have influenced why the ancient inhabitants chose this location.
