Hôtel Reifenberg, Private mansion in 16th arrondissement, France.
The Hôtel Reifenberg is a private residence on rue Mallet-Stevens with a geometric facade featuring horizontal lines and a striking vertical staircase visible from the street. The roughly 28-meter-long building houses garages and service areas on the ground floor, reception rooms on the first floor, and bedrooms for children on upper levels.
The house was built between 1925 and 1927 for Madame Reifenberg, widow of industrialist Hugo Reifenberg. It was the first of five private residences to be constructed on rue Mallet-Stevens, setting the tone for this distinctive street.
The staircase is illuminated by an Art Deco stained glass window created by Louis Barillet and Jacques Le Chevallier. Jean Prouvé designed the entrance gate, bringing together multiple artistic voices within a single residence.
The building is visible from the street, offering a good view of its distinctive facade and staircase design. Interior access is not available to the public, but the architecture and artistic details can be appreciated from outside.
The design employs successive setbacks that create terraces and give the building a dynamic profile. Vertical blade chimneys accentuate this sense of movement and add sculptural interest to the overall composition.
