Lake Szelid

Lake Szelid is a shallow water body within Kiskunság National Park that stretches several kilometers across Bács-Kiskun County with a width between 150 and 200 meters. The water deepens to around 4 meters in places, creating a varied aquatic environment.

The lake sits in an area with ancient settlement traces revealed through excavations at the Várdomb sand dune on its southern shore. Burial urns dating to the 1st millennium BCE were uncovered there and are now housed in a national museum.

The lake area maintains traditional fishing practices while supporting nature conservation efforts to protect local flora and fauna species.

The lake has several access points along its shore with different areas for visitors to explore and use. Visit during warmer months when water conditions are best for recreation and wildlife observation.

The water contains a distinctive blend of sodium carbonate, magnesium salts, and sodium iodide that supports over two dozen species of blue-green algae. This particular mineral mixture creates conditions found in very few other lakes across the continent.
